The European Union has officially introduced the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is changing how travelers enter and exit the Schengen Area. This new system replaces passport stamps with digital biometric registration, including fingerprints and facial scans.
The system started gradually in 2025 and is now fully operational across Schengen borders in 2026. Travelers entering Europe for the first time under the new system must register their biometric data at border kiosks.

What This Means for Travelers
- Passport stamping will be replaced by digital records
- Fingerprints and facial scan required
- Border checks may take longer
- Authorities will track overstays automatically
Airports are already warning passengers to arrive early due to possible long queues during peak travel seasons.
